Way to go Angelo, Tiara, and Colt for making the AR challenge goal today!  Woo hoo!

I hope you all have a safe and happy Spring Break!

Tuesday, March 22, 2016

I cannot believe it's already Spring Break time!  We are off school on Thursday, Friday, and Monday.

Tomorrow we will have our Good News Party in the morning, which should make for a super calm afternoon. (ha ha-- probably not)

Just a few reminders:
We are reading The Garden this week and next week.
Reading homework journals-- due Thursday, March 31.
Multiple choice test for The Garden-- Thursday, March 31.
Written test for The Garden-- Friday, April 1.
Spelling test-- Friday, April 1.  (sun, frog, toad, now, green, will, they, does, rain, pain, garden, frightened-- Bonus Words)

Field trip to the Magic House--Wednesday, March 30.  If you have any outstanding fees please pay them.  It is school policy that if your child has unpaid fees they are not allowed to attend the field trip.  A note came home today on a pink piece of paper if your child owes for anything.

On Tuesday, I will send home a note to the chaperones.
Here is the list of chaperones who have volunteered to go and who have turned in their background check to the office:
Tyrie's mom
James' mom
Amariona's mom
Landon's grandma
Micah's mom
Colt's mom
Terrell's mom and dad
Cadynne's grandma

If I do not have your name listed but you signed up to attend it means the office did not receive the necessary paperwork in order to approve you.  We turned in our final numbers to the Magic House today.  I'm really sorry if you wanted to attend but aren't able to due to your work schedule or due the paperwork.  We will miss you but don't worry, your child will have oodles of fun stories to share with you!

Congratulations to the following students who made their AR goals since my last post:
Terrell
Dasani
Maha
Alana

Congratulations to Autumn, who made the AR challenge goal since my last post!

The grading period ends tomorrow, which means that tomorrow is the last day to make AR goals or the challenge goal.  Our AR challenge party will be in the afternoon on March 29.  We start new AR goals and a new challenge goal on Tuesday, as well.

Have a safe and happy Spring Break!

Happy birthday, Maddox!!!!  Thank you for sharing the delicious cupcakes with us!

We got to use something that we've never used in our class until today... watercolor paints!  We did a really fun spelling activity today called "Invisible Ink."  I had them write their spelling words twice in white crayon.  (They had to REALLY pay attention and write SO carefully because they couldn't actually see what they were writing on their white paper!)  Then we took our spelling papers outside before morning recess and the words we wrote "magically" appeared as we painted over them with watercolors!  It was a hoot watching their faces as their words became visible in front of their very eyes.  There are SO many FUN ways to practice spelling words!

We finished reading Bartholomew and the Oobleck today.  Ask your child what Oobleck is and ask them what the magical words were which saved the kingdom from it!

Reading Homework Journals are due tomorrow.  Also, please listen to your child read The Kite and sign their reading slip.  The reading slip is due tomorrow.  We will take the multiple choice portion of our reading test over this story tomorrow.  (Don't forget to practice spelling words and discuss vocabulary words, as well.)  We will also work on comprehension questions during class and we will practice writing in complete sentences while restating the question.  We will take the written sentence part of the test on Friday.

Enjoy your evening!

These two little cutie patooties showed up with twinsie braids today.  Love, love, love it!

I hope everyone has had a terrific Tuesday!  We had a great day today!  Lots of learning and lots of fun!

Congratulations to Dasani for creating the tallest pipe cleaner structure for our STEM activity!  James took second place but only by about a half of an inch!

My children visited us this afternoon for the last 50 minutes of the day.  They didn't have school today and no one to watch them after 2, so they hung out with us.  It was fun to be able to get my kids and "my kids" meet!  ha

I had a note all typed up to send home regarding reading books and I tried to send it to the printer twice but it wouldn't print.  I love technology when it works!  I'll send it tomorrow if the printer is working.

Your child will bring home their reading book every night except for Friday.  Please listen to your child read the story of the week.  Discuss the questions on the page following the story.  This week’s story is The Kite.  The discussion questions are on page 45.  I will send home a slip for you to sign stating that your child has read the story but I will only send it once a week.  I will usually send it on Wednesdays.  During regular 5 day school weeks the multiple choice portion of the test will be on Thursdays.  The written part of the test will be on Fridays.  I will send home a comprehension worksheet on Thursday evenings to help practice for the written part of the test.

Have a great evening!  I hope you're all enjoying this weather!  I'm about to take my little ones to the park and home to BBQ!  We love spring weather!!!!

Monday, March 14, 2016

I hope that everyone had a happy Monday!

We took our first Unit 7 reading test today.  Don't worry, it was only a practice!  We didn't get finished with the written portion of it because we ran out of time but we will finish them tomorrow. I will send home a note along with an example copy of the test, and your child's written portion with their practice scores.  Remember, this one was not for a grade!  We will have a test over The Kite on both Thursday and Friday.  We will complete the multiple choice questions using the ActiVotes on Thursday and we will complete the written portion on Friday.  The spelling test will also be on Friday.

For our STEM activity we had a competition as to who could build the tallest pipe cleaner structure.  Several students didn't finish so we will finish and judge them tomorrow.  Pictures to come!

Congratulations to Daylin who made his AR goal today!  Congratulations to Alexis who made the AR challenge goal today!  We really do have some reading rock stars in here!

Just a reminder, field trip permission forms and $1 are due on Wednesday, March 16!  You can pay other fees up until the day before the field trip but we must have the $1 for the cost of the field trip by this Wednesday because we have to pay the Magic House.

Homework:
Math page 375-376.
Discuss the meaning of the following vocabulary words:  meadow, thud, joke, watched
Practice spelling words

Have a wonderful evening!

Bonus words:

We started Unit 7 this week.  It's very different from our previous reading units.  There are hardly any decodable books, less blending lessons, more focus on comprehension and reading strategies (cause and effect, main idea, sequencing, etc.).  The biggest difference is that a portion of the reading test (3 questions) focus on writing the answer to a question in a complete sentence.  Also, we now have a hardback book!  This will come home a few times a week.  It is so important that your child returns it to school every day so they have it when we need it in class.

I had planned to do a "practice" test for the Itsy Bitsy Spider today.  Since I missed so many days this week I didn't get to do the normal preparation that I would've done.  I got them caught up today but I would normally have sent home a note explaining the reading tests before taking the practice test.  What I will do instead is have them take the practice test on Monday and I will send home the explanation of how the test is graded afterwards.  This test is not for a grade!  It is only for practice.  It will allow you to see the format of the reading tests for the rest of the year.

Have a wonderful weekend!  Enjoy those little darlings!  :)

Tuesday, March 8, 2016

What a crazy couple of days I have had!  I'm sure most of your children have shared with you that I moved over the weekend.  (My students looked PANICKED when I said I was moving!  NO WORRIES I told them!  It's only a 2 block move! ha)  The move went well but then my daughter got sick.  She still isn't well and now I feel like I am getting sick, too.  I have decided to stay home tomorrow to knock these germies out!  I don't normally get sick but I think I overdid it this weekend with the moving and my body is telling me to slow down!  I just wanted to let you know why I haven't been here.  I've already had a few of you emailing to check on me.  Thank you for that!  You gave me the warm fuzzies!!!

I was here this morning to administer the reading test (this was before I knew I was getting sick).  Our class did AWESOME on that test!!!!  I had them all kiss their brains for being such smarties!!!  The part that they had the most trouble with was the sequencing.  We will continue to work on that skill.  I will send home the test results by Thursday, I hope.

Congratulations to Tyrie, Landon, and James for making their AR goals!  Woo hoo!!  We are just ROCKING this whole reading thing!

Spelling words for this week: and, six, three, go, wrote, free, teach, street, tree, eat
Bonus: climbed, spider

Stay healthy everyone!  There's a lot of yuckies going around.

Wow... I just reread my blog.... germies, warm fuzzies, kissing brains, yuckies... yep... you can tell I'm a first grade teacher.  hee hee

Oh, the fun!  We had a really great day today!  The students loved celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday!
We made funny pseudonyms for ourselves to use for the day.  Ask your child what a pseudonym is! We made Cat in the Hat hats, completed a Dr. Seuss word search, came up with -at rhyming words, answered questions about a Dr. Seuss book pie chart, and we read with friends and also listened to Dr. Seuss stories aloud.  At the end of the day we watched a couple of Dr. Seuss' stories on DVD.

Besides the extra reading being extra fun we had quite a few students make their AR goals today as a direct benefit!  Congratulations to D'Mario, Maddox, and Alexis for making their AR goals!  Also congratulations to Patrick and Autumn for making their goals last week.  (I don't remember mentioning it last week, so I apologize.)  Way to go Patrick for being the first student this grading period to make his AR Challenge goal of 9 points with at least 80% accuracy!!!  That's awesome!

Michael lost a tooth today, which was pretty exciting, especially when he dropped it on our speckled hallway floor and we had to find it!  Luckily these old eyes still work pretty well and we found the tooth!  Phew!  Disaster averted!  There's never a dull moment in first grade!

Don't forget reading homework journals and decodable books are due tomorrow.

Enjoy your little darlings tonight!  :)
I forgot to remind everyone that the spelling test over Unit 6 Lessons 14-15 will be on Friday, March 4.  The words are: photo, phone, graph, worn, word, artist, wrong, wrap, want, could
Bonus words are: should, rough

As I'm sure you have noticed the words are getting harder as we go!  I have been SO proud of my little darlings for their dedication on keeping up with the increasingly difficult work!

Just a few reminders:
Math Chapter 4 test on "Subtraction Strategies to 20" is tomorrow, March 2.  Patrick, James, Autumn, Colt, Tyrie, and Angelo do not need to take the test because they earned 100% on their review today.  We had about 6 more who were SO CLOSE, with either 1 or 2 wrong!!!!  Great job kiddos!  I sent home a review sheet for those who will take the test.  Please complete those and turn them in tomorrow.

The Unit 6 Reading test is on Tuesday, March 8.  I will send home a study guide before the weekend.  You can get a head start by reviewing blending lessons from the reading homework journal, reviewing vocabulary words, and practicing sight words.

Tomorrow, March 2 is Dr. Seuss' birthday!  (His real name is Theodor Geisel.)  We will have a birthday celebration in honor of our beloved Dr. Seuss.  I sent home a note today regarding this.  Students may bring 3 Dr. Seuss books (if you don't have any, then any 3 books will do).  Please write your name in them.  They may bring a snack (no drinks and nothing messy).  They may also bring a small blanket or towel to lay on.  I will dedicate a portion of our day to enjoying some of our favorite Dr. Seuss stories.

Thanks to those of you who have taken the time to subscribe to and read my first grade blog!
